Detailed insights into the Canadys Station energy project and its impact on South Carolina

What is Canadys Station?

Canadys Station is a modern natural gas power generation facility designed to provide reliable and efficient energy for South Carolina. The plant leverages advanced technology to generate electricity with improved environmental performance and grid stability.

Why did Dominion Energy and Santee Cooper choose this site?

To take advantage of existing infrastructure, Canadys Station will be located on the site of Dominion Energy’s former coal-fired facility in Colleton County. The site also is near existing and planned Santee Cooper electric transmission lines, bringing additional efficiencies and savings.

How does natural gas complement renewable energy in South Carolina?

Natural gas serves as a flexible energy source that can quickly respond to changing electricity demands. It provides critical backup for renewable energy sources, ensuring consistent and reliable power supply, regardless of weather.

What are the expected economic benefits?

The project will create hundreds of contract construction jobs. Once completed, the plant will create well-paying permanent jobs and serve as an anchor to attract more industries and indirect jobs. Additionally, the plant will generate significant local tax revenue and support economic development in the region.

Who regulates and oversees the project?

The project will include regulatory proceedings with the Public Service Commission of South Carolina and state and federal environmental agencies. These agencies ensure compliance with environmental standards and grid reliability requirements. The South Carolina Office of Regulatory Staff will continuously monitor the project and provide monthly updates in writing to the Commission and to members of the General Assembly.

Kinder Morgan was selected to be the best supplier of natural gas for Canadys Station. They will also participate in regulatory hearings before state and federal agencies, including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
