Canadys Station willgenerate enough energy to power over 1 million homes while using advancedenvironmental protections
CANADYS, S.C., May 14,2026 – The PublicService Commission of South Carolina voted Thursday to approve an applicationby Dominion Energy and Santee Cooper to jointly construct Canadys Station. Theproposed natural gas combined-cycle generating facility in Colleton County isneeded to serve South Carolina’s rising demand for energy.
The proposed plant willprovide approximately 2,200 megawatts of electricity – enough to power over 1million homes with advanced, proven technology and state-of-the-artenvironmental protections.
“While Canadys Station willhelp meet the state’s growing energy demand, its benefits will extend beyondpowering homes and businesses,” said Jimmy Staton, President and CEO of SanteeCooper. “Canadys Station is good for the community, respectful of the environmentand an excellent value for customers. We appreciate the time and effort theCommissioners spent understanding our plans for this critical energy project, considering the perspectives of interested stakeholders, and making a timelydecision.”
The combined-cycle facilitywill be constructed at a former Dominion Energy coal plant site approximately40 miles northwest of Charleston. The established brownfield site willeliminate the need to acquire and clear large swaths of new land. Strategicallypositioned at the energy crossroads of the Lowcountry, the site has efficientand cost-effective access to existing and planned transmission lines.
“For 50 years, the formerCanadys generating station provided reliable energy across the South CarolinaLowcountry while providing economic benefits in partnership with ColletonCounty,” said Keller Kissam, president of Dominion Energy South Carolina. “Withits ruling today, the Public Service Commission authorizes Santee Cooperand Dominion Energy to sensibly repurpose this existing site withstate-of-the-art technology to power future generations of the Palmetto State.”
Providing a long-lastingeconomic boost to the local community, hundreds of contracting jobs will becreated during construction, and many full-time jobs will be created to operatethe plant.
